A Reading Celebration with Kumon Canada

If you’ve been following masalamommas.com, you know that education and books are an integral part of the conversation in our community amongst moms. More than 29 million children across North America live in low-income households. Many of these children have little or no age-appropriate books at home, and the classrooms and programs they attend are woefully under-resourced.

Kumon reading program

As we all know, reading is critical for the growth and development of young children.  Beginning in February, more than 10,000 new books were distributed by First Book Canada at Kumon’s head office to in need schools and community based programs across the Greater Toronto Area. Book recipient groups included teachers, librarians and community based program administrators who distributed the books to the children they serve. These books were also given children from low-income families, to start their own home-based libraries to nurture a love of reading.

Recently  Kumon Canada put on a reading celebration in Toronto community in need at F.H. Miller School. Author Julie Kraulis did a wonderful reading of her book,  An Armadillo in Paris to approximately 60 grade 2 students who were very excited to hear her.

Students across Canada enjoyed presentations just like this one from children’s authors and illustrators,  thanks to Kumon Canada instructors.

Each student will also receive a signed copy of the author or illustrator’s book to take home and keep.
