Going to New York Fashion Week is probably one of my favorite parts of blogging. Of course anyone can choose to view almost every fashion show online in the comfort of their own home, and many people do, but I believe nothing beats the seeing the live shows, feeling the buzzing energy in the streets of NYC, and attending the fabulous parties and events.

When planning my outfits for Fashion Week, I always try to make them a little extra special, but not too over the top. Fashion insiders attending the shows aren’t there for “peacocking” or showing off wild outfits in hopes of getting photographed – unless that is already their modus operandi, i.e. style icon Anna Dello Russo, whom I love by the way.

Even though the weather screamed “summertime” I still wanted to incorporate fall trends in to each of my looks. There were plenty of die hard fashionistas wearing head-to-toe Fall 2014 clothes, including knits, wool, and leather, but I went the slightly more comfortable route of altering my trend styling to suit the weather.

Here are 5 looks I wore to attend shows at fashion week that you may want to incorporate in your ‘fall style’ this year, and in case you are wondering, I always packed a spare pair of flats in my bag for when my feet had enough high heels!

Trend #1 – Grey – The color of the season isn’t much of a color, but when worn with like colors can form a beautiful neutral palette that adds an air of sophistication to any look. The skirt is a sweatshirt material which makes it really comfortable, and the top is my constant go-to – a white button-down oxford.  Skirt: J.Crew (on Sale!) | Heels: Schutz | Wallet: Celine | Bag: Givenchy – Similar via Fashionphile | Top: Forever 21 | Sunnies: Gucci  | Watch: Michael Kors | Bracelets: T+J Designs |

Trend #2 – The Scarf – Loosely draped, tied around the waist, knotted, or wrung around the neck, a scarf is this seasons best accessory. I chose to wear mine around my neck until the heat became to unbearable, then I just wore it on my arm like I might wear a dupatta.

Outfit #2: (Purple Pants): Top: Theory (sold out) Similar Style | Scarf: Givenchy | Pants:  Elizabeth and James | Shoes: Christian Louboutin – Similar on sale under $200! | Bag: Chanel Similar Style |

Trend #3 – Floral – The Summer staple print takes a darker, romantic turn for Fall. I paired these floral trousers with a wide cut top, a statement heel, and a leather jacket to finish off the look. (see above)

(Floral) Pants: Anthropologie | Top: Topshop (no longer available) Similar Style | Jacket: All Saints – Similar Style | Heels: Valentino – Similar Style | Bag: 3.1 Philip Lim

Trend #4 – Trench Coat/Wide-Brim hat –

The trench coat is a fall must-have, and I love the flattering fit of a soft trench with a tie-waist. I paired with another one of my favorite trends for fall, the wide-brim wool hat. Though it might be scary at first to wear such a big hat, I was surprised at how comfortable I felt wearing it, and I would encourage everyone to try for themselves! Outfit #4: (Trench Coat Outfit): Hat: H&M Similar Style | Jacket: H&M Similar Style | Booties: Vince Camuto | Bag: Alexander Wang | Dress: Diane Von Furstenberg | Bracelets: Lia Sophia | Watch: Michael Kors | Earrings: Gift

Trend #5 – Leather –

The easiest way to look super chic is to wear leather. I wore this all black look for a dinner party where I knew there would be plenty of fashion bloggers and industry insiders in attendance. This skirt has a seam which adds an element of interest to the simple pencil style. I paired with a black cami and blazer for a more formal look.

Skirt: Nordstrom (on major sale right now!) | Cami: J.Crew |  Jacket: Zadig & Voltaire Similar Style (less than $100) | Bag: Givenchy – Similar Style | Shoes: Stuart Weitzman (on sale 50% off!) – Similar Style with shorter heel (less than $40!) | Watch: Michele

Nice looks, and thanks for those of us who wonder what the real fashion people wear to fashion week. The street style “peacocks” grab all the attention, though….
