Diwali is just around the corner and it’s time to start planning our menus and dessert tables. Diwali is one of the most popular, festive and brightest Indian festivals. It’s a time when all the family and friends gather, exchange gifts and sweets.

Food plays an important role in South Asian holidays and celebrations. Whether it be the main meal, snacks or drinks, we are always thinking and planning the next meal. No celebration is complete without a touch of sweet dishes. Desserts in general are the highlight of every festival, they are the most popular and most awaited dishes of Diwali. Their various colours, flavours and varieties add enthusiasm to any festive spirit. There is nothing quite like an inviting table decorated with a variety of Diwali desserts.

gulab jamun trifle
This Diwali I thought it would be fun to put a twist on the traditional, much loved classic dessert of Gulab Jamun. Gulab Jamuns are milk dumplings that are fried and dunked in sugary simple syrup. They are a classic dessert that you can find at any South Asian eatery. To put a fun twist on the classic, I cut them into slices and layered them with cardamom whipped cream and roasted pistachios.

Gulab Jamun Trifle
You can customize these Gulab Jamun trifles to your liking, add a layer of fresh fruits, custard or mango purée. You can make this in a large dessert dish or serve them individually in bowls or mason jars. I also think these would look absolutely darling in mini shooters with angoori jamuns, who can resist mini desserts?!

Your guests will adore you for this twist on the classic dessert. Gulab Jamun trifles can be made with everyday ingredients, as long as you have the Gulab Jamuns! Make these ahead of time so you can spend less time in your kitchen and more time with your guests celebrating Diwali.
