Traditionally South Asian outfits always include a separate piece of fabric or dupatta, which typically ends up being used more as an accent to the outfit than its intended veiling purpose, but nonetheless is still considered a key part of the ensemble. Scarves are the ultimate in demure elegance, displaying modesty and beauty simultaneously. When I think of some iconic scarf wearing women in history, I immediately think of Jackie O, Benazir Bhutto, and Audrey Hepburn. I believe our ancestors were on to something with the dupatta, because a scarf can elevate an outfit in an instant.

Wearing a scarf is also one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to accessorize your look, and I am always looking for new ways to wear mine. In my collection I have a few designer scarves that I consider my ‘investment scarves’ that I treat like my jewelry, but the bulk of them are from discount high street shops like Zara or H&M. After doing some research, I’ve concluded that some of the most complicated looking styles are actually the easiest to achieve!

Right now I love to throw on a bright patterned scarf over a t-shirt and jeans if I am going out to brunch, or for a more elegant style, I will drape a sheer scarf over a lightweight trench and add a belt for a Burberry runway-inspired style. Alternatively, you can tie a scarf around your sun hat to add some color, wrap it in a bow on your purse handle, or even wear it as a belt.

In this video, I demonstrate five easy ways you can tie a scarf to achieve a completely different look. For all of these styles, I suggest using a square scarf in a sheer or very light fabric for the best results. All of these styles can also be done with an oblong scarf, the results will only look slightly different, but I promise it does work!
