The routines we set, the nutrition we offer and the activities we provide are just as important to our children learning as actually sitting them in a classroom! Add these checklist items to your school year and watch your kids succeed!

Back to School Checklist

Healthy Morning Hustle

Mornings are a busy time when everyone seems to be going in a different direction. Decide together what tasks each person can do to help calm the chaos. Even the youngest family members can empty some of the dishwasher, brush their own hair and teeth and open lunch bags ready to be filled. As they get older, have the kids pack water bottles, snacks and get breakfast and vitamins out so everyone has a healthy start to their day.

Brain Boosting Breakfast

Include berries such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries in the most important meal of the day. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, they ward off damage caused by free radicals and may improve the cognitive function of the brain. Add in steel cut oats for protein or omega 3 eggs for a breakfast that will leave them feeling full and hungry for learning.

Smart Snacks

Include calcium, whole grains and Vitamin D rich milk, yogurt and cheese for snacks as part of a balanced day. Calcium keeps bones & teeth strong while Vitamin D boost their immune system to keep them healthy and in the classroom. Grains are full of B Vitamins and fibre to keep kids alert and improve memory function. Water is also an important snack that is often over looked. Staying hydrated, especially if your kids are active, is an important part of a smart day.

Active Activities

Studies suggest that 90% of Canadian kids do not get the recommended 60 minutes of activity each day. With shorter nutrition breaks, you can’t count on school to keep kids active. Walk to school if you can, go for an after dinner family bike ride to the park, kick a soccer ball around the front yard, hike on weekends and find an after school activity the kids enjoy like swimming, dance, or football. Active families are healthy families.

Vital Vitamins

Add vitamins to the morning routine and give the kids a healthy start to their day of learning! Studies prove the benefits of fish oil (Omega 3s) for brain and eye health, Calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones and teeth, and a good Multivitamin that contains vitamins A, B, C, and E to promote a strong immune system. Add in a good dose of Vitamins Zzzz (sleep!) too so kids stay alert during the day.

Check all these items off your Back to School Checklist and give your kids the healthiest school year possible!
